If your student would like additional help with choreography, we encourage them to take advantage of the help sessions that happen at least once a week. Help sessions are ran by the dance captains for both Varsity Singers and Viking Volume.
There will not be any director-led practices but there will be 2-3 practices led by student leadership. Students who are unable to attend any of these practices over the break will be required to send a video showing that they have taken time to practice.
Yes, these competitions usually go very late into the next day so to prevent you from needing to drive back to the high school you may take them after awards and after their room is clean. Call times can be very early in the morning and students are expected to be at the school in their travel attire (black pants, black shirt, and cardigan) with all items packed and ready to go a call time. Ladies may need to have hair and makeup done (especially volume girls)
At the beginning of the week, you should be able to find order of performances on www.showchoir.com. Detailed Itineraries will be sent out by directors on the Wednesday before the competition. Both groups will be guaranteed at least one performance and if they qualify for finals in the evening they will have a 2nd performance. Typically Volume performs before Varsity Singers.
Each competition will host a solo competition during the day. Students will perform if they have auditioned with Mr. Childress and Mrs. Webb and were selected to represent HNHS show choirs. Mr. Childress will give students information on these auditions.
After groups have their first performance, all students and parents will report to the auditorium or gymnasium (varies based on competition) to determine if we advance to finals. During this time, caption awards may be given out to groups. Caption awards vary by competition but may include best choreography, best vocals, best crew, best band, etc.
Typically usually the top 3 unisex groups and the top 5 mixed groups qualify for finals and will perform for a 2nd time in the evening. Immediately after the evening performance, students are asked to pack up their costumes and get them loaded onto the costume racks before they go anywhere else. This is required so the crew is given enough time to load the equipment trailer.
This award ceremony is for any caption awards that were not given out during daytime awards. Groups that made it to finals will also find out what place they fall in the competition. It is not uncommon for this to happen at 11pm or later.
NO ONE is allowed to leave until the rooms are cleaned and Mr. Childress releases students to head to busses or leave with parents.
This will depend on how much you would like to get involved.
- Chaperone = This requires you to ride to and from the competitions on the buses. This does allow you to get into the competitions for free.
- Help Backstage = It takes a village of people to get the set on and off the stage as quickly as possible. This comes with a stamp to get into the competition and parents usually sit in the equipment storage area.
- Come watch = Competitions cost around $20 per person for an all-day pass. Those parents in the audience are important to add to the cheering crew and bringing energy to the auditorium.
