John P. Wenning is a highly respected choral director, vocal coach, and music educator based in Carmel, Indiana, known for his decades-long influence on high school choral music. He began his teaching career at Huntington North High School in 1985, where he revitalized the school’s choral and show choir programs. Starting with just 16 students, Wenning grew the Varsity Singers into a nationally recognized ensemble of about 40 members, introducing innovative elements such as full instrumental accompaniment, enhanced choreography, and dynamic stage productions. Over his 28 years at Huntington North, his choirs won more than 70 grand championships and were named among the top 16 mixed choirs in Indiana for 17 consecutive years, including earning the title of Grand Champion Concert Choir for the state in 1996. That same year, Wenning was honored as both the Huntington County Community Schools Teacher of the Year and the Huntington Rotary Club’s Educator of the Year. Renowned for his ability to inspire confidence and artistry in his students, Wenning emphasized helping young people discover and develop their musical potential—many of whom went on to successful music careers. After retiring from Huntington North in 2015, he continued his work as a freelance choral arranger, clinician, consultant, and private voice instructor, now teaching over 30 students and serving as a staff accompanist at Carmel High School. A graduate of the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification Program, Wenning remains passionate about helping singers of all backgrounds unlock their voices and find joy in performance.
